Sandulenko demonstrates with a look at his last implementation, an obscure adventure called Full Pipe. Sometimes all this takes years, not months. Those different game versions each require more work. There's a lot of trial-and-error, and it's not a one time process. That mapping can take months, and then the ScummVM team has to convert the code into C or another language. We call the process of figuring it out 'mapping.'" all you're left with is taking an address from memory location X and use it as a pointer to another byte, and so on. Along the way you lose all the function names, all the variable names. "We take the original binary, and if you know the process of compilation, you'll know that turns high level programming code into assembly and then binary code. You want to run the Macintosh version of Indiana Jones, which was in black and white? We can do that in ScummVM. We have games based on SCUMM engines for Atari and Macintosh and Apple 2c and Amiga. Secondly of course, not all games were written for DOS or Windows. Something like DOSBox, you'd need about a gigahertz to run it. Something like Monkey Island was written in the CPC era, on slow machines, and our requirements for it are about the same. This is the major difference between emulators, like DOSBox and reimplementation, like ScummVM. "ScummVM started in 2001 and some of the platforms we were running on were only 25. "Well, the key words are ‘these days’!" Sandulenko points out. It does however mean development can look quite slow on the outside, especially since these days you can drop more or less anything into DOSBox and have it at least run acceptably. ScummVM, which runs games like Monkey Island and Sam & Max is also amazingly cool to have on the road.Īlso there are emulators for the old C64 home computer, and of course NES/SNES emulators. This hand-crafted approach has given ScummVM a well-deserved reputation for quality. Warfare Inc, as Chris suggested is a Windows CE clone of Command & Conquer, and while it works, my personal fav game for Windows CE is a game called Slay (recently released for iPhone/iPod Touch )

There is a Half-Life mod for that somewhere on the web, which makes it look similar to Half-Life. However, there is a Doom port for Windows CE, which will let you play the classic Doom game. Half-Life, with its 3D effects would take you even longer.

It is possible to install Bochs, a PC emulator, onto Windows CE, along with a copy of Windows 95/98 within that, but unless you want to spend a year to finish a level in Star Craft, I would not recommend it.

You will never be able to install a full-blown desktop version of Windows onto your NEC that would be capable of playing the games you mentioned. Steve Jobs mentioned with the first iPhone release that the iPhone would run OS X, but it turned out to be a Windows CE-yfied version instead.

Rather than comparing it to a desktop Windows version, it is more along the lines of Android or iOS (iPhone ) Windows CE is not a light version of Windows XP or Windows ME, it is a different version of Windows, which, while similar in looks to Windows 95/2000, was made from scratch with a different purpose, instant-on and low-power, and while it can be used as a laptop replacement, its main use is more for basic office work, such as typing/reviewing documents and spreadsheets. Yes, the NEC has a 400Mhz processor, but it is an ARM-based (not AMD spelled differently ), which works completely different than the more recognizable x86 processor such as the Pentium, Celeron, Centrino and Core Duo/Quad While they are NetBooks (the name Netbook was actually marketed first for a Windows CE device from Psion ), they lack the compatibility from a "mainstream" (or overcommercialized ) Netbook.

Many people seem to advertise them as such, or as MID, because in theory they are, but practically there is a huge difference. The NEC Mobile Pro (as well as all Windows CE devices ) are not NetBooks like the eeePC or Acer ones.

SCUMMVM IPOD PORTABLE

The system Im trying to run them on is an NEC MobilePro 900, so I know the hardware should support it, but Im curious if the OS will?īased on your question my guess is that someone sold you the NEC as a portable computer or a netbook. Im thinking like - StarCraft, Half-Life, Command&Conquer - those types of older games? Curious if there are any compatible games for this OS?
